Effective January 1, 2020, the State of Tennessee will begin issuing two types of handgun carry permits to those citizens who meet the required training and background check qualifications.
Handgun carry permits issued by the state before January 1, 2020, will continue to be recognized and will be re-titled as Enhanced Handgun Carry Permits (ECPs). The same training standards, fees, and background checks will apply to those who wish to obtain ECPs after the first of January. ECPs allow permit holders to carry handguns in openly or in a concealed manner.
A second handgun carry permit, the Concealed Handgun Carry Permit (CCP), will be available after January 1, 2020 and will have different training requirements. Those who qualify for a CCP are limited to carrying their handguns in a concealed manner only – no open carry is allowed with the CCP.
There are also greater restrictions with CCPs on carrying handguns on public and private school grounds.
