In January 2020, a new Tennessee law went into effect renaming the existing “Handgun Carry Permit” the “Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit.” All conditions, responsibilities and training requirements associated with the formerly titled permit remained unchanged under the new “Enhanced” permit. This law also created a new type of permit, the “Concealed Handgun Carry Permit,” which features a lower application fee, revised training requirements and more restricted carry rights, limiting the right to carry in certain areas and allowing concealed carry only — no open carry of handguns on the person of the permit holder is allowed.
There are currently 37 states that recognize Tennessee’s Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit when traveling within their state borders. However, Reciprocity Agreements among the various states may or may not currently recognize the new Concealed Handgun Carry Permit.
The new law was intended to make handgun carry rights available to a wider scope of responsible, law-abiding Tennessee citizens who wish to carry a handgun for their protection. Most notably, it allowed applicants for the Concealed Handgun Carry Permit to rely upon a broader range of training options in order to qualify for their permit. One of the options includes electronic/online video courses, which must be of at least 90 minutes in length and meet state-mandated criteria for the required subject matter. Such courses must also include a test of the course material. Unlike the 8-hour training course associated with the Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit, there is no shooting test requirement associated with the Concealed Handgun Carry Permit.
